Mondovi

The first post office in Lincoln County was in Old Mondovi. The original town of Mondovi was on the old wagon road to Fort Colville between Reardan and Davenport. Mondovi was a stopping place for travelers on the road. This is also where the trail forked. If you are traveling north, the left fork would take you to Fort Colville and the right fork would take you to Spokane.

Before the railroad arrived, speculators platted off a new town along the right-of-way and the lots were advertised for sale in the newspapers. The promoters hyped up the place and made it sound like a great city was to spring up when the railroad reaches it. Sad to say, but nothing was ever built. As time went by, the property taxes came due and there were few that ever made any payments.

In January of 1897, the county reduced the town site to just a few blocks, and the remaining vacant lands were absorbed back into the farms that they were cut out from. There are still a a few people living in the several residential homes along the main street in Mondovi.
